Quincy’s gut kept alternating between tightening and jumping. He led Con, now clothed, down the long staircase, one hand gripping his arm, the other gripping his cane. The run through the woods had done nothing good for Quincy, and his leg was cramping worse than ever. He was also exhausted, but there was nothing to be done about that. He pushed through the discomfort, knowing he needed to be strong for what happened next. He needed to be strong for Con. The poor young man had been through enough and was now in a house full of strangers, of predators. What was more, despite his hopeful words to the falcon, he wasn’t at all sure what Elizabeth would decide after Con explained what he could.

The adults of the pack, even the servants, minus the sentinels, were gathered in the parlor. The fire roared in the hearth, causing all eyes to gleam and shadows to dance upon the walls. Con trembled and Quincy squeezed his hand, trying to reassure. The five to follow Devonshire had returned, letting her flee from the woods, as were the standing orders. Quincy thought it was for the best, since none of them knew the full extent of her power.

Elizabeth sat in the high-backed chair, her posture stiff, almost frozen, her eyes blank. Cornelius stood to the right of her chair, his own eyes hidden in the shadows. The rest were either standing or sitting, muslin and cotton rustling as they moved restlessly.

When they entered the room, everyone fell silent. Quincy led Con to the center of the parlor before letting go and taking a step back. That was all the distance he put between them, and he knew it spoke volumes to the room. The only sign Elizabeth gave was the slightest narrowing of her eyes, the thinning of her lips.

“Now that we have all assembled,” Elizabeth began. “I must inform you that the coachman and third companion of the countess escaped before we could secure them.”

Quincy clenched his teeth.

“They took her carriage and the horses, as well as setting loose our own horses.”

Angry murmurings greeted that revelation.

“They have gone,” Cornelius said, “we know not where, but it is obvious they will be back in force before much longer.”

Elizabeth’s gaze found and pinned Con.

“Quincy, please introduce your friend to us.”

Quincy cleared his throat. “Lord and Lady Buchanan, this is Con. Con, my aunt and uncle.”

Con bowed his head. “It is a great honor to formally meet you both.”

Both of Quincy’s alphas inclined their heads in greeting, but Elizabeth’s eyes remained hard and Cornelius’s remained flat.

“Now then, Con,” Elizabeth said. “Tell me everything you know about Countess Devonshire. You will also tell me about the object you protect.”

Quincy watched, waited, and Con only paused a short moment before speaking. “I don’t know much about the countess. She’s a trickster and a manipulator. She uses her power and influence to gain what she needs. She’s a woman on a mission, Lady Buchanan, a mission of destruction. I suspect her to be a witch, a powerful one.
